St. James Annual Dinner and Auction
October 24, 2008
St. James Fifth Annual Dinner and Auction
“Save the Date” and mark your calendars….
St. James will be hosting our Annual Dinner and Auction this year on Saturday, October 24, at the Lone Star Convention Center. This year’s auction theme is “Treasures of the Sea,” and will feature dinner, dancing and our famous live and silent auctions.
As always, the success of this auction depends on parish and community donations. A donation letter has been sent out to selected businesses in the greater Conroe area asking for gift certificates, etc. If you have a business that you frequent and you think the owner would like to contribute a gift item or service, please don’t hesitate to ask them. Donated items are tax deductible and “Charitable Contributions Substantiation” forms (to be used as a receipt) are available from the church office.
As we need the support of our entire parish family, please give serious thought as to what YOU might donate for this auction. Popular items in the past have been vacation time shares; resort packages; tickets for concerts; plays; sporting events; golf packages; antiques; sports memorabilia; artwork; decorative accessories; home décor and jewelry. In high demand are “time and talent” items: special baked goods, babysitting, gardening, household repairs, tax preparation; computer training, interior design, etc. No item is “too small”—many smaller donated items can be combined by the auction committee into “theme” baskets!
If you cannot think of anything to donate…please consider the “gift of cash”. The auction committee already has great ideas of items to purchase and seeks monetary donations to enable us to do just that. Thank you for choosing to participate in this worthy event. Remember that the goal for this fundraiser is to support our community outreach programs: Montgomery Co. Interfaith Hospitality Network, Montgomery Co. Food Bank, the Soup Kitchen, Montgomery Co. Emergency Assistance, Habitat for Humanity, Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, our Medical Mission to Honduras and our annual Youth Mission trip.
Any questions, please call Elsie Deming at 936-273-0218 or Ann McCaleb at 936-588-6772.

SUNDAY SCHOOL KICKOFF
September 7, 2008
FALL KICKOFF
Here at St. James, as we begin to prepare for a new year in Sunday School, we hope that you and your family will sign up to participate. In addition to our traditional children’s Sunday School program (age 2-6th grade), we also offer a Jr. High and a Senior High class. New at St. James this fall, adults will have a choice of three classes to attend. Please plan on attending our Kick-Off Sunday on September 7th to learn more about these programs. The morning will begin with a Sunday School Pep Rally in the Parish Hall at 9:15am. Come prepared for a fun experience!
Please take a moment to complete the registration form for your children, so that we may properly staff our Sunday School Program, and drop in the offering plate or in the church office. Enrollment forms can be found in the Narthex.
If you have questions, please email Jamie Murphy at jamie@stjames-conroe.org

A FRIENDLY REMINDER
At St. James, it is our custom to have a period of quiet before each service to allow worshipers time to calm their minds and prepare their hearts to come into the Lord’s presence in worship. As you enter the church, please respect those who are in the pews praying. We know how important it is to catch up with people you haven’t seen all week, but ask that you try to have your conversations in front of the church or (quietly!) in the narthex. Thank you!

FOOD DRIVE
St James has long supported the Montgomery County Emergency Assistance and the Martin Luther King Jr. Center food pantries, and we have an opportunity to rally to the cause again. Next time you are in a grocery store consider picking up a few extra items to bring to the church. Sam's sells many food items in packages of eight or twelve cans, for example. The large restaurant sizes are NOT needed, as the food will go to individuals and families. Here are some of the items in particularly short supply: chili, Spam, tomatoes, jelly, toilet paper, paper towels, water, spaghetti noodles and sauce, rice, breakfast cereal, powdered milk, all vegetables Bring whatever you can to church on Sundays and we will assure that it gets to the needy families. Thanks for your support.

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENT
In as effort to save postage, we would like to start sending the quarterly contribution statements by email. Please email Eleanor Vallhonrat at eleanor@stjames-conroe.org with the email address to which you would like your statement sent or sign the form in the Narthex. This effort will be a part of our stewardship of resources.

Sunday Flowers
Give glory to God and celebrate and honor the lives and special occasions of family and friends, living and those already with God, by providing Sunday altar flowers in their name. The Altar Guild takes care of the ordering; you need only sign up on the calendar located across from the office and note how you would like your gift listed in the bulletin, or you may call the church office. The florist charges $70 for the flowers on the altar on Sunday ($35 per vase). Please make your check payable to St. James and note in the memo that it is for altar flowers. Remember, following the services the flowers are shared with those who are hospitalized or home bound.

Remember Your Name Tag
St. James has had a good history with nametags. We try to keep our collection up to date so that we can all wear them on Sundays to make visitors and new members feel more a part of our family. Let’s renew our commitment to evangelism by remembering to locate and wear our name tags when we come in each Sunday. This is something that takes very little effort but has a huge return. The experts tell us that churches whose members wear their nametags are more likely to be seen as friendly and inclusive.

We Need Your E-Mail Address
Emails: It is important to let us know of any changes in your email address to continue receiving our Net and other church mailings. Please email Myra Liston at mllis@suddenlink.net with any changes. Also, if we do not have your email address, please fill out one of the forms in the Narthex or email Myra.
